2015 Black, Asian, & Minority Ethnic Day
21 March 2015
At the 2014 Annual Conference we had a very successful Youth Day and we will be looking to replicate that sucess this year with a Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) day on Monday 27th April 2015, hopefully, encouraging Branches to include a BAME person in their delegation to Conference.
In order to make BAME Day a memorable experience for everyone, we have planned various initiatives to make this day interesting. Our itinerary will include:
- Guest speaker Roger McKenzie, Assistant Secretary – Unison, will address Annual Conference speaking about the importance of engaging with under-represented groups and the vital role that they can play in our union structures.
- A visual illustration of BAME Day will be evident by virtue of special t-shirts that have been produced highlighting a ‘HEROES’ theme and this theme is further backed up by the creation of a commemorative booklet titled “BAME Heroines & Heroes of the Labour Movement”. The booklet will include many of our own BAME heroines and heroes recognising their contribution to our union and the wider movement.
- A fringe meeting to discuss the emotive subject of deaths in custody, which disproportionately effects BAME people.
- A ‘What to Expect from Conference’ leaflet, designed for first time BAME delegates/visitors.
