Headquarters Printing and Reprographic Services
Branches and Representatives will wish to know that CWU Headquarters
have recently acquired new reprographics equipment. The purpose of
broadcasting this information is to inform you that we are now able
to offer a print service to branches that we believe will be within a
price range that you will find competitive. Amongst the services we
can provide are colour or black & white posters, leaflets,
booklets etc. It is not possible to produce a price list as prices
will vary dependent on each individual job based on quantity,
timescale, delivery requirements etc. If you would like more
information about this service or wish to receive a quote for a
particular piece of work then please ring or email Jacquie Winter,
Acting Head of Post & Reprographics. 020 8971 7218, jwinter@cwu.org

Recruitment Literature Copyright Infringement
Branches need to be aware that if they embark on a membership
recruitment campaign, any literature produced, especially when
targeting a particular workplace or employer, should not breach any
copyright legislation.
I have recently received correspondence from the Legal Department of
a major Telecommunications Company, which threatens CWU with legal
action, as a result of a recruitment publication produced by the CWU,
which clearly used similar logos and slogans within the leaflet,
which they allege is copyright infringement. In this particular case
the situation has been resolved and I have been assured by the
individuals responsible for the production of the leaflet, that it
will no longer be used.
If Branches have any concerns regarding recruitment literature, then
they should contact the Organising Department or Legal Services Department.
Any enquiries on the above paragraph should be referred to Mr Tony
Rupa, Legal Services Officer, 150 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London,
SW19 1RX.

Road Traffic Accidents Whilst On Duty
Branches need to be aware that the Legal Services Department have
recently dealt with an inquiry, whereby a member was involved in a
road traffic accident whilst driving a Royal Mail vehicle on duty.
The incident was subsequently reported to Royal Mail. However, the
Employer then wrote to the member, indicating that there was a legal
responsibility for him to report the accident to his own insurance
company, irrespective of the accident being covered on Royal Mail's
insurance. On taking legal advice, I have been informed that Royal
Mail's request is in order and in fact, any person who is involved in
a road traffic accident and irrespective of the circumstances is duty
bound to report the details to their own Insurance Company and if
they fail to do so then they are in breach of their insurance policy
and acting fraudulently.
Any enquiries on the above paragraph should be referred to Mr Tony
Rupa, Legal Services Officer, 150 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London,
SW19 1RX.

TUC/CWU Hazards At Work Safety Reps Handbook
This is to give Branches and Safety Representatives advance notice
that a new bound "Book Version" of "Hazards at
Work" is due out in the autumn and that the existing
"Ring-Binder" version is to be phased out. The new version
will consist of around 380 pages in A4 format and it has been
completely revamped to make it even more practical and user friendly
than its predecessor. The TUC Union Health and Safety Specialists
(UHSS) Committee has examined draft versions of the new publication
and the previews have been extremely complementary. The new book will
also be cheaper for unions that the existing "ring-binder"
format and although the purchase of single copies direct from the TUC
will be around £20 inc p&p, the CWU HQ Health, Safety &
Environment Department is negotiating a "bulk purchase
discount" arrangement and hopes to offer the publication to
Branches and Safety Reps at a considerably reduced price. The Hazards
At Work manual was adopted as the Official CWU Safety Reps Handbook
some years ago and has become a very popular and successful
publication amongst Safety Representatives.
The TUC's main reason for the change away from the current
"ring-binder" version with its annual updates was that less
and less updates were being purchased annually, leading the TUC to
become concerned that as time passed more and more 'out of date'
manuals were being held and used by Safety Reps and Trade Union
Branches etc. Additionally, production of a more comprehensive bound
edition could be done more cost effectively.
The aim will be to issue an updated version of the bound edition
every two or three years.
"Hazards At Work" will continue to be provided as a
resource for Safety Reps on TUC approved courses at a specially
reduced price.
Branches and Safety Reps do not have to place orders now, however we
will be issuing further information offering Branches and Safety Reps
the opportunity to place orders once we have a firm delivery date
from the TUC Printers.

Low Level Letter Boxes Campaign
The following letter of support has been received from the National
House Builders Association (NHBC) Standards Committee who have agreed
to circulate their 18,000 plus professional house-builder subscribers.
"Dear Mr Joyce
Low Level Letter Boxes - European Standard BS EN 13724
I refer to the letter from Mr Farookhi to you dated 3 May.
The content of your letter dated 6 April has been discussed by both
the NHBC Standards Review Group and ultimately the NHBC Standards Committee.
The Standards Committee considered that it would be best to bring the
matter to the attention of house builders by an article in Standards
Extra. I am enclosing a copy of the latest edition for you to gain an
appreciation of it. This has a circulation of approximately 18,000
plus professional subscribers. It is likely that the letter box
article will be published later in the year as our August/September
edition is currently being finalised.
When it is published, I will of course send you a copy.
I hope that you find this an acceptable way forward and wish you
every success in reducing the number of back injuries to your members.
Yours sincerely
Peter Crane
Head of Standards
National House Builders Association
cc. Intiaz Farookhi, Chief Executive"
